Obagi Magic

Nothing beats Obagi Nu Derm to transform skin into perfection. The system works at the cellular level removing sun damage, uneven tone, large pores + blackheads, acne scaring, fine lines to create a clear, clean, healthy glow. It’s great for breakout prevention, and removes layers of dull, lackluster skin. Most importantly it takes years off you skin. Of course, beauty is pain, and with that you have to get over looking like you contracted a severe windburn that lasts all month long – but after that – it’s smooth skin forever (as long as you keep up with the program 2x’s a week).By not using the products routinely (stopping and starting), you get a shedding effect – so I recommend sticking to it – or dropping it after 6 weeks – but for heavens sake, don’t go back and forth unless you want to look a mess. The products constantly turn over your skin so that the new glowing you can show through. This creates problems with foundation (which isn’t really necessary at this point - your skin is even toned, pore-less, and smooth). But, for those premier events, something light (YSL Teint Parfait) seems to work the best for me. Otherwise your skin looks like its peeling in patches (invisible unless you put foundation on it). The spray foundations seem to work OK, too (DiorSkin AirFlash Spray Foundation).

The draw back (not that peeling red skin would be any issue to looking younger): the system uses Retin A - available by prescription only. So - a trip to the dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon is the only way to get it. The system mixes Retin A with a “Blender” product that allows for deeper penetration and stronger exfoliation. Hydroquinone works with it to eliminate uneven skin tone and brown spots.Magic isn’t cheap. But you always get what you pay for. The system can run upwards of $250 – but lasts forever (all but Retin A can be purchased on-line for less – we won’t discuss buying prescriptions overseas for less). I was able to find the Travel Kit for around $190 -great size and value when you’re on maintenance. I’ve used this system consistently for the last 5-6 years and at 45, I don’t have any fine lines or large pores to speak of. I was deprived once for a whole two weeks while traveling in Italy, and came back with bumpy, gravely broken out skin. Never again! I’d rather pack heavy next time.

Like any product used with Retin A, it’s important to avoid too much sun and always use at least SPF 30 when outdoors. For really sun damaged scared skin, Obagi offers a “Blue Peel” that erases decades of sin – very sun damaged skin and deep acne scaring - but I’ve only witnessed the mummy like peeling that presents itself the following week. I’ve been told it has more punch than a chemical peel. On a side note, if you are considering this - take an Advil 30 minutes before your appointment. The Nu Derm system, by the way, is painless.
